7 Things to Pray for Your Pastor That Have Nothing to Do With Sunday’s Sermon
October 16, 2026

The goal is not simply helping pastors keep going. It is helping them live and serve from a place of health and connection with God.

If you’ve ever wondered how to pray for your pastor, you may automatically think about Sunday’s sermon, the next church event, or whatever is happening in the congregation.

Those things matter, but your pastor needs prayer for much more than what happens from the pulpit.

Healthy pastors need prayer too.

Pastors are people before they are preachers, teachers, or leaders.

They need the same things we all need: a growing relationship with God, strong relationships with the people they love, wisdom for everyday decisions, rest, and joy in their calling.

Ministry also has an unseen side.

Conversations, decisions, preparation, relationships, and moments of quiet discernment may never be visible to the congregation.

Praying for these areas is one way to care for your pastor as a whole person, not simply for the work they do.

Here are seven areas to include in your prayer for pastors.

1. Pray for Their Personal Walk With God

Before asking God to bless what your pastor does, pray for who they are becoming in Christ.

Ask God to give your pastor time and desire to remain close to Him, to hear His voice through Scripture and prayer, and to continue growing in trust and dependence on Him.

Their relationship with God is not simply a ministry resource. It is the foundation of their life.

Sample prayer:
Lord, draw my pastor close to You and give them a deep desire to know You more. Help them find their identity and strength in You, not simply in what they accomplish.

2. Pray for Their Marriage

If your pastor is married, pray for the relationship they share with their spouse.

Ask God to protect their friendship, communication, affection, and time together.

Pray for opportunities for them to enjoy one another outside of ministry and for their marriage to continue growing through every season.

Marriage does not need to be in trouble for it to be worth praying for.

Sample prayer:
God, strengthen my pastor's marriage and give them and their spouse meaningful time together. Help them continue to enjoy, encourage, and care for one another.

3. Pray for Their Children and Family

Pastors' families have their own personalities, interests, seasons, and needs.

Pray for each person as an individual rather than seeing them only as part of the pastor's ministry.

Ask God to guide your pastor as a parent, give their family a strong foundation in Christ, and provide opportunities for them to enjoy ordinary life together.

If their children are grown, keep praying. A pastor never stops being a parent.

Sample prayer:
Father, watch over my pastor's family and help each member grow in faith and in their own relationship with You. Give them joy in the ordinary moments they share together.

4. Pray for Meaningful Friendships

Pastors need friends who know them beyond their ministry role.

Pray that your pastor has relationships where they can laugh, talk honestly, ask questions, and simply be themselves.

Ask God to provide friendships that bring encouragement, perspective, wisdom, and genuine companionship.

You can also pray for the friendships your pastor already has, that they would have the time and freedom to nurture them.

Sample prayer:
Lord, surround my pastor with faithful friends who know and appreciate them as a person. Give them time and space to build relationships that bring encouragement and joy.

5. Pray for Wisdom in the Decisions They Make

Pastoral leadership involves countless decisions, some highly visible and others no one else will ever know about.

Pray for wisdom in conversations, leadership decisions, pastoral care, relationships, finances, planning, and the many ordinary choices that shape ministry.

Ask God to help your pastor distinguish between what is urgent and what is important, and to lead with humility and discernment.

Wisdom is not about having every answer. It is about knowing where to turn for the answer.

Sample prayer:
God, give my pastor wisdom and discernment for the decisions before them. Help them listen well, seek Your guidance, and lead with humility and courage.

6. Pray for Rest and Endurance

Rest is part of a healthy life with God, not something a pastor has to earn.

Pray that your pastor can receive rest without feeling the need to be productive.

Pray for healthy boundaries, refreshing time away, good sleep, and the endurance needed for the responsibilities of ministry.

This is also an area where prayer can lead us toward action.

If you know your pastor's regular day off, respect it. If your church leadership is considering a longer season of rest, Cedar Creek's sabbatical resources can help provide a framework for thinking about intentional renewal.

The goal is not simply helping pastors keep going. It is helping them live and serve from a place of health and connection with God.

Sample prayer:
Father, teach my pastor to receive rest as a gift from You and give them endurance for the work You have entrusted to them. Renew their strength and help them make room for Sabbath and restoration.

7. Pray for Joy and a Deepening Sense of Calling

Ministry is not only about responsibilities.

It is also about the privilege of serving Christ and participating in what God is doing in people's lives.

Pray that your pastor continues to experience joy in their calling.

Ask God to renew their sense of wonder, gratitude, and purpose, and to help them notice the quiet ways He is at work.

Sometimes the most encouraging prayer is not, "God, help my pastor get through this," but, "God, help my pastor enjoy You and the calling You have given them."

Sample prayer:
Lord, deepen my pastor's joy in knowing You and serving Your church. Remind them of the beauty and purpose of their calling, and help them recognize Your work even in the ordinary days.

Turn Good Intentions Into Consistent Prayer

It is easy to think, "I should pray for my pastor more often," and then get caught up in the week.

That is where having something tangible can help.

A pastor prayer guide gives you a place to slow down, name specific areas, and return to them regularly.

Cedar Creek's Praying for Your Pastor journal was created as a simple way to turn good intentions into consistent, specific prayer.

Instead of wondering what to pray about each time, you can use guided prompts to intentionally pray for the pastor and ministry leader in your life.

Whether you use it on your own, with your family, or alongside others in your church, a prayer journal for pastors can help make prayer a regular practice rather than an occasional thought.

You can also share the journal with a friend, small group, Sunday school class, or church leadership team.

Prayer becomes especially meaningful when more people begin intentionally covering their pastors and ministry families in prayer.

Healthy Pastors Need Prayer Too

Prayer for pastors should not begin only when something is wrong.

We pray because pastors belong to Christ.

We pray because their personal lives matter.

We pray because their marriages and families matter.

We pray because their friendships, decisions, rest, and joy matter.

You don't have to be hurting to be worth praying for.

That is true for pastors, too.

If you have been encouraged by a pastor's ministry, this is one simple way to give something back.

You do not need a special position in the church or a perfect prayer routine.

Start with one area.

Pray for five minutes.

Write down a name.

Keep going.

Over time, those small prayers can become a steady rhythm of care.

And if you would like to learn more about how Cedar Creek comes alongside pastors and ministry families, we'd be glad to connect.

You can pray, encourage, share, introduce, refer, or give.

Each is a meaningful way to participate in caring for those who spend their lives caring for others.
